Councilman Jones to hold meeting on flooding issues in the Richmond South Central 9th Voter District

WHAT          Richmond, Virginia - The Honorable Michael J. Jones, Councilman, Richmond City Council, Richmond South Central 9th Voter District, will hold a meeting to discuss flooding issues in the Richmond South Central 9th Voter District.

"Flooding has been an ongoing problem in the Ninth District, and it will continue to happen as heavy rains and serious storms become more frequent due to the increasing global temperature," says Councilman Jones. "Water often stands needlessly for days after it rains and flooding has blocked neighborhood roads off completely and this negatively impacts the health, safety, and quality of life of our families; creates fetid breeding areas for mosquitoes and disease; and, makes hazardous and challenging transportation routes. We need to fix this."

"I am strongly committed to building, fixing, and improving streets, curbs, gutters, roads, sidewalks, alleys, and infrastructure in the Ninth District and I need my fellow residents to join me in advocating for these necessary improvements," says Councilman Jones.

"I want all Ninth District residents to come out and share how flooding has adversely impacted their lives, ask questions, bring photos and videos, and receive answers," says Councilman Jones. "Now is the time to speak, listen, learn, and be heard and I hope I can count on everyone to join me in taking a leadership role in addressing this important issue on behalf of all our Ninth District families, friends, and visitors," says Councilman Jones.

Councilman Jones will be joined by Mr. Calvin Farr, Director, and Mr. Howard Glenn, Deputy Director of Operations, for the Richmond Department of Public Utilities.

Background
Serving in the historic role as Richmond's first black fire chief for the Richmond Department of Fire and Emergency Services, from 1978-1995, Chief Lewis began his career in the fire service in 1956 with the Philadelphia Fire Department, where he served many years prior to his celebrated 17 year tenure in Richmond.

Promoting African American employment and relations in the fire service, Chief Lewis was a founding member of the International Association of Black Professional Firefighters and served as its Northeast Regional Vice President and its Affirmative Action Officer.

As further testament to his achievements, Chief Lewis earned many awards, accolades, and honors over the years, which included the Richmond NAACP Freedom Award and being named the 1991 Virginia Fire Services Board - Equal Employment Opportunity Person of the Year.

During his tour of duty in Richmond, Chief Lewis helped establish and support programs such as: fire safety education; smoke detector giveaways; firefighter career development; river, dive, and rescue team; and, rebuilding 25 fire stations and department facilities.

Chief Lewis was a trailblazer and an extraordinary and greatly valued member of the Richmond Department of Fire and Emergency Services. His lifetime of dedication and service as a member of the fire service community demonstrates a legacy of great honor and respect.
