Gates open at 8:30 a.m. and event and is free and open to the public – a $4.00 donation per family encouraged to benefit the Maymont Foundation
WHAT The Honorable Marty Jewell, Councilman, Richmond City Council, Central 5th District, encourages everyone to see exotic animals at the Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom show at Maymont Park this Saturday. The event will include original cast member, Jim Fowler, whose presentation will include an alligator, reticulated python, eagle owl, young leopard and binturong. There is no cost but a suggested donation of $4.00 per family can be made to benefit the Maymont Foundation's ongoing programs.
Gates open at 8:30 a.m. and attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets and picnic baskets. No alcohol or glass containers are permitted.
Richmond City Council will recognize Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom during the Council Formal Meeting tonight, 6:00 p.m., with an Official Community Service Award for its leadership in educating generations of Americans on the beauty and importance of animals and nature.
Sponsored by the Mutual of Omaha insurance company, Wild Kingdom is a wildlife and nature television show that was produced from 1963 to 1988 and revived in 2002. It first aired on the National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) television network on Sunday, January 6, 1963. This half-hour television program introduced millions of Americans to many exciting and exotic animals and is credited with increasing ecological and environmental awareness in the United States. Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom is credited with leading the way for such current television networks as the Discovery Channel and Animal Planet.
Once a private estate, Maymont is a 100-acre public park that is owned by the city of Richmond and managed by the Maymont Foundation. The park includes beautifully landscaped grounds, walking trails, a nature center, children’s farm, Japanese and Italian Gardens, mansion, historic buildings, carriage collection, and wildlife exhibits. The Maymont property was given to Richmond citizens in 1925 following the posthumous wishes of owners, James and Sallie Dooley.
