Richmond City Council mourns loss of Virginia Supreme Court Justice Leroy Rountree Hassell, Sr.
The Honorable Leroy Rountree Hassell, Sr., Virginia Supreme Court Justice, died today, Wednesday, February 2011.
(Richmond, Virginia) – The members of Richmond City Council express their sorrow at learning of the death today, Wednesday, February 9, 2011, of The Honorable Leroy Rountree Hassell, Sr., Virginia Supreme Court Justice.
Justice Hassell was a leader, from his graduation from the University of Virginia where he was selected as a scholar of the year, to his time at Harvard Law School, where he served as a recruiter in the admissions office and worked on the Civil Liberties Law Review.
Justice Hassell was appointed to the Supreme Court of Virginia at the age of 34, and was elected Chief Justice in 2002.
As a Virginia Supreme Court Justice, he was also known for his work in the area of Mental Health Reform.
“His death at such an early and untimely age diminishes us all, and leaves us without the intelligence, compassion and dignity he brought to his beloved Commonwealth and the Virginia Supreme Court,” says The Honorable Kathy Graziano, President, Richmond City Council.
