Councilwomen Newbille and Robertson to host Richmond Regional Citizen Reentry Community Forum Meeting: Focusing on rehabilitating, restoring and reintegrating an individual back into society as a productive law-abiding citizen

WHAT The Honorable Cynthia I. Newbille, Councilwoman, Richmond City Council, East End 7th District, and The Honorable Ellen F. Robertson, Councilwoman, Richmond City Council, Gateway 6th District, will host a community forum meeting sponsored by the Richmond Regional Citizen Reentry Council. The meeting will focus on rehabilitating, restoring and reintegrating an individual back into society and transitioning them into a permanent and productive law-abiding citizen following incarceration as the ultimate goal of our criminal justice system.
The meeting will include a panel discussion and a question and answer session. Free refreshments will be served and all citizens are invited and encouraged to attend.
Last night during the Richmond City Council Formal Meeting, Council officially proclaimed October 11-17, 2010 as Richmond Regional Citizen Reentry Awareness Week, recognizing that rehabilitating, restoring and reintegrating an individual back into society and transitioning them into a permanent and productive law-abiding citizen following incarceration is the ultimate goal of our criminal justice system. Critical to reentry success is the management, funding and delivery of an integrated comprehensive criminal justice system that encompasses the following three phases: pre-incarceration, incarceration and post incarceration. These criminal justice system phases include: promulgation and enforcement of fair laws; judicial sentencing; design and construction of jails and prisons as correctional facilities that establish rehabilitative and therapeutic communities; mental and physical health services and substance abuse treatment; education and training; and social services that include employment, housing and financial management programs. Barriers and needs for successful reentry include: education, mental and physical health and substance abuse, employment, housing, financial and community resources, and family support and community reintegration.
A rehabilitated person who returns to society as a permanent and productive law-abiding citizen significantly reduces crime, recidivism, and costs;
