Councilman Hilbert and Councilwoman Robertson encourage citizens to take tour exploring Barton Heights, Battery Park and Highland Park neighborhoods
Free bicycle and walking tour organized by the Alliance to Conserve Old Richmond Neighborhoods; Entire community invited and encouraged to participate
WHAT Councilman Chris A. Hilbert, Richmond City Council, Northside 3rd District and Councilwoman Ellen F. Robertson, Gateway 6th District, invite citizens to take a tour exploring the Barton Heights, Battery Park and Highland Park neighborhoods by participating in the “Travel our City Neighborhoods” tour. Located in the two districts, the tour was created for citizens to explore, by bicycle or walking, the history and architecture of three of Richmond’s early streetcar suburbs. The event is free and open to the public.
The tour will begin with a brief morning presentation from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. of the history of the three neighborhoods, presented by Bill Martin, Valentine Richmond History Center. Participants will then be provided a list of homes that will be open for self-directed viewing.
A booklet, containing listings of available houses for sale, will be given to all attendees; along with information on real estate tax credits and other rehabilitation incentives that may help prospective homeowners purchase and renovate some of the many beautiful and architecturally important homes and buildings in these neighborhoods.
There will also be a guided bicycle tour, that follows the route of the old streetcar transit lines that used to connect these neighborhoods for those interested in cycling through these three remarkable, historic communities. In case of rain, the presentation and house tour will go on as scheduled; the bicycle tour will be rescheduled.
Participants are also encouraged to visit one of the many restaurants on Brookland Park Boulevard for lunch.
The tour is being organized by the Alliance to Conserve Old Richmond Neighborhoods with the assistance of the Battery Park Civic Association, Southern Barton Heights Community Association, Highland Park Civic Association, Valentine Richmond History Center and the Richmond Department of Planning and Development Review.
