Richmond to honor Harlem Globetrotters, Richmond City Attorney Norman Sales and others tonight

WHAT    Richmond will honor the Harlem Globetrotters, Annette Holt, Virginia Local Initiatives Support Corporation, Richmond City Attorney Norman Sales, among others (ALL LISTED BELOW), during the Richmond City Council Formal Council meeting tonight. The ceremony will also include a presentation by the Virginia Law Enforcement Professional Standards Commission of Accredited Law Enforcement Agency Certification of Accreditation on behalf of the Richmond Sheriff’s Office.

Of the many duties performed by Richmond City Council on behalf of the community, one of the most rewarding is the recognition and honoring of individuals, businesses and organizations who, by their demonstrated commitment and example, inspire others and help to make Richmond an even better place to live, work, learn, play, visit, and raise a family.

Recognizing and honoring those who provide resources, time, talent and energy on behalf of the Richmond community sets a standard for service to others; encourages a sustained commitment to civic participation; and, inspires others to action.  It is for these reasons that Richmond City Council publicly recognizes individuals, families, groups, organizations, and businesses through the confirmation of awards during Formal Council meetings.

Richmond City Council and Mayor Dwight Jones Official Recognition Award

Harlem Globetrotters
The Honorable Dwight C. Jones, Mayor of Richmond, and The Honorable members of Richmond City Council, the governing legislative body of Richmond, do hereby unite together in solidarity and common purpose to jointly and publically recognize and celebrate the Harlem Globetrotters exhibition basketball team for the many years of fun-filled entertainment they have provided for generations of families.

    With a history dating back to 1926, the Harlem Globetrotters are one of the most recognizable, most iconic, and most-loved sports-entertainment teams in the world. Known for the incorporation of tremendous basketball skills and comedic routines, the team has been showcased in numerous movies, cartoons and television shows over the years.

    The outstanding legacy of the Harlem Globetrotters includes having played more than 25,000 games before more than 130 million fans in 120 countries and, in 2002, being inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball of Fame.

Annette Holt
Dance Program Specialist/Co-Dance Program Manager
Richmond Department of Parks, Recreation and
Community Facilities-Municipal City Dance Program

Richmond City Council does hereby officially recognize, honor and celebrate Annette Holt, Dance Program Specialist/Co-Dance Program Manager for the Richmond Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities-Municipal City Dance Program in recognition of thirty years of teaching dance to the residents of Richmond.

    Joining the Richmond Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities in 1979, Ms. Holt has played an integral role in the establishment and success of the current Municipal City Dance Program. During her tenure, the program has included more than 15,000 students ranging in age from three to 80 who are instructed on a wide variety of dance style that include Ballet, Modern Dance, Urban Hip-Hop and Christian Praise Dance.

Greta Harris
Interim Executive Director
Virginia Local Initiatives Support Corporation
Richmond City Council does hereby officially recognize and honor Greta Harris, Interim Executive Director, of the nonprofit Virginia Local Initiatives Support Corporation for her organization’s role in assisting the City of Richmond with additional funding to install football field lighting and other upgrades on behalf of the Richmond Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities’ Hotchkiss Community Center and Blackwell Community Center.

    The financial assistance for these projects included grants from the National Football League Grassroots Program, a partnership between the National Football League Fund, the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation and the Local Initiatives Support Corporation.

Marvin Hicks
Richmond City Council does hereby officially recognize, Marvin Hicks, a member of one of the Richmond Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities youth football teams, for being among 94 Richmond youngsters who visited the National Football League’s Washington Redskins Football Team training camp in August and was one of two Richmond children selected to serve as a “kickoff kid” by removing the kicking tee during the first and second-half kickoffs at a Redskins’ preseason game on August 28, 2009.


Damien Maple
Richmond City Council does hereby officially recognize, Damien Maple, a member of one of the Richmond Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities youth football teams, for being among 94 Richmond youngsters who visited the National Football League’s Washington Redskins Football Team training camp in August and was one of two Richmond children selected to serve as a “kickoff kid” by removing the kicking tee during the first and second-half kickoffs at a Redskins’ preseason game on August 28, 2009.

Community Service Award ______________________________________________

Mary Argenteanu
Richmond City Council does hereby officially recognize, honor and celebrate Mary Argenteanu for her leadership and dedication in helping to further beautify Richmond Public Schools and the community.

    A lifelong public servant, Ms. Argenteanu is a retired Commonwealth of Virginia employee and member of the Richmond Audubon Society. Her community beautification efforts included her active leadership in the creation and care of Learning Gardens at Richmond Public Schools’ Swansboro Elementary School and Southampton Elementary School and in the establishment a nature trail in the community Southampton Neighborhood.

    Assisted by school administration, educators, and volunteers, the Learning Gardens are designed as teaching tools and serve to beautify the schools and the entire city. Greatly enhancing our community and the education of our children, these scenic Learning Gardens include native plantings that are designed to be bird and butterfly friendly and drought and weather tolerant. Financial support for these projects has come from the Audubon Society, Southampton Citizens Association and individuals.

Southampton
Citizens Association
Richmond City Council does hereby officially recognize and honor the Southampton Citizens Association for its ongoing dedication to the further beautification of the Southampton Neighborhood, located in the Southwest 4th District of Richmond.

    The Association’s community beautification efforts include financial support of the creation and care of a Learning Garden at Richmond Public Schools Southampton
Elementary School and in the establishment a nature trail in the community.

    The Southampton Citizens Association represents the residents of the Southampton and Stratford Hills area of Richmond through the support of programs and initiatives used to further increase and enhance the livability, economic value and welfare of
the community.

    Assisted by school administration, educators, and volunteers, the Learning Garden at Southampton Elementary School is designed as a teaching tool and serves to beautify the school and the entire city. Greatly enhancing our community and the education of our children, the scenic Learning Garden includes native plantings that are designed to be bird and butterfly friendly and drought and weather tolerant.

Anonymous Benefactor
Richmond City Council does hereby officially recognize and honor an Anonymous Benefactor for her dedication to helping further beautify our community and Richmond Public Schools.

    This anonymous benefactor’s community support efforts includes their considerable personal financial donation on behalf of the construction and maintenance of the Learning Gardens at Richmond Public Schools’ Swansboro Elementary School and Southampton Elementary School and in the establishment a nature trail in the community Southampton Neighborhood.

    Assisted by school administration, educators, and volunteers, the Learning Gardens are designed as teaching tools and serve to beautify the schools and the entire city. Greatly enhancing our community and the education of our children, these scenic Learning Gardens include native plantings that are designed to be bird and butterfly friendly and drought and weather tolerant.


Richmond City Council Thomas Jefferson Award for Public Service _________

For providing more than 20 years of outstanding legal representation on behalf of our city government, which includes progressive service in the Richmond Office of the City Attorney as an Assistant, Senior Assistant, and more than four years as the Richmond City Attorney; from October 1989 through December 2009.

OTHER BACKGROUND ___________________________________________________

Richmond City Council meetings
Richmond City Council holds an average of 12 official monthly public meetings to discuss, deliberate, and act on laws and policy on behalf of the community. Citizens are invited and encouraged to attend these meetings, which include (but are not limited to) two “Council Formal” Meetings, two “Council Informal” meetings, six Council Standing Committee meetings, and Public Hearings/Special Events/Commission meetings held on an as-needed basis.

    Formal Council meetings
Richmond City Council Formal Meetings are typically held the second and forth Monday of each month, from 6:00-8:30 p.m. (With the exception of August, when no Formal meetings are held, and holidays). These meetings are held for deciding official Council action, which includes discussing, adopting, rejecting, and amending laws and approving the budget. Formal meetings include a time for pubic comment and are televised live on the local PBS station and are replayed in Richmond on Government Access Channel 17, beginning at Noon and 7:00 p.m. daily.
