A statement by Councilmember Reva M. Trammell regarding the

Richmond Vote on November 7, 2023 Regarding the Casino Referendum

"My heart is shattered. My peoples' hearts are broken.

Voters don't realize or seem to care that $26 million in city revenue per year is gone.

The 1500 jobs are gone. The restaurants are gone, the 55 acre park and walking trails are gone. The 4-star hotel is gone.

It's sadly our loss and another city's gain.

I have had hundreds and hundreds of calls from residents, businesses, and pastors from my district. My people feel that we don't matter. How do you overcome something like this? Nothing can replace what we lost.

The project was not going to cost the city one dime -- when every other project expects city taxpayers to contribute big money.

Many citizens of my 8th district are needy, and some are the poorest of the poor. Apparently voters in other districts don't understand our needs and why this project was so important to us. At the same time, all 9 city districts would have received part of the $26 million annually.

I never saw Richmond Grand as just a casino. I don't gamble. I focused on the jobs, the entertainment, the hotel, the park, and the tourist revenue. We lost it all.”
