A statement from
Richmond City Council
Regarding
the passing of
Rodney Lofton
Richmond, Virginia – “Richmond City Council mourns the loss and celebrates the life and legacy of Rodney Lofton, Richmond Black LGBTQ+ advocate, author, community leader, and friend.
A Richmond native, Rodney served for many
years as a local and national LGBTQ+ leader and compassionate voice in
creating, assisting, promoting, and delivering LGBTQ+ programs, services, and
support networks and working on behalf of those living with HIV, HIV/AIDS
prevention, and case management.
Some of Rodney’s extensive work and
leadership roles included serving as Executive Director of The Renewal
Projects, Deputy Director of Diversity Richmond, and as a member of the
Richmond Human Rights Commission.
Throughout his life, Rodney opened the
eyes, touched the hearts, and comforted the souls of so many people across our
community and truly helped to make our Richmond, where y’all means all, an even
more inclusive and LGBTQ+ friendly place to live, love, work, learn, visit, and
enjoy family.
Rodney will be missed by Richmond City
Council, family, friends, colleagues and all those who knew, loved, and cared
about him.”
