A Permanent destination
for the RVA League for Safer Streets basketball league
“Too
many of our children are being taken from us before their time. This must end
and we need solutions that will help get us there.
This is why I have asked
for, and the Richmond Chief Administrative Officer, Lincoln Saunders, has
committed to, identifying a permanent destination for the RVA League for Safer Streets.
RVA League for Safer Streets runs a
basketball league for young men ages
17-28 with teams from Richmond’s high-crime communities. It’s program also
includes personal development workshops and training. Over the years, it has
been credited with contributing to reductions of crime within public housing
communities and the city.
RVA League for Safer Streets is community-centered and partners with the
Richmond Police Department, Richmond Department of Fire and Emergency Services,
Virginia LISC, and other state and local entities. It hosts league sessions,
ranging from 12-week leagues to special holiday tournaments.
While successful and
serving hundreds of young men across the city, this program does not have a
permanent home for its tournament play for games.
This is why I asked for
a commitment by the city to identifying a permanent destination for RVA League for Safer Streets.
Our children’s lives
depend on it.”
