Richmond City Council authorizes referendum on a local 1% sales tax for Richmond Public Schools, creation of new Richmond Slavery and Freedom Heritage Site, and construction of new Richmond Fire Training Facility Burn Tower Replacement project

Council authorized a referendum on a local 1% sales tax to support Richmond Public Schools

Council authorized a referendum to be held later this year for Richmond voters to decide if the City should be authorized to levy a local 1% sales tax to be used for capital projects for the construction or renovation of Richmond Public Schools facilities.  

 

Council authorized establishment of a new Richmond Slavery and Freedom Heritage Site

Council authorized execution of an agreement with the Shockoe Legacy Foundation for planning and development of a Richmond Slavery and Freedom Heritage Site, including Lumpkin’s Pavilion and a National Slavery Museum.

 

Council facilitated construction of a new Richmond Fire Training Facility Burn Tower

Council facilitated construction of Richmond Department of Fire and Emergency Services Fire Training Facility Burn Tower Replacement Project to enhance the safety of fire service personnel while conducting live fire training.

 

Council adopted new version of the Richmond Code of Laws/Ordinances

Council acted to repeal and replace the Richmond Code of Laws/Ordinances with an updated recodified version that includes renumbered sections, compliance with applicable laws, etc.

 

Council authorized funds supporting Libby Hill Park

Council authorized acceptance of State funds for Richmond Department of Parks, Recreation, and Community Facilities: Libby Hill Park Project.

 

Council further protected historic African American cemeteries

Council accepted additional funds from the Virginia Department of Historic Resources to support preservation, maintenance, and stewardship of Forest View Cemetery, a historically African American cemetery.

 

Council increased housing availability in city

Council acted on additional legislation to further increase housing availability in the city.

 

Council reviewed and considered Special Use Permits

Council reviewed and considered Special Use Permit ordinances for properties in the city.
