Richmond City Council Statement regarding

Richmond Water Service Restoration

(Richmond, Virginia U.S.A. 1.8.2025) – “Richmond City Council thanks everyone for their patience and the time, space, and grace required for the City to bring the water system back online. We understand that this has been an incredibly difficult time for residents, businesses, and all those who rely on the Richmond Water System.

Please know we are working around the clock to ensure your concerns are being addressed urgently and that your health and safety continue to be the highest priority.

During today’s previously scheduled, virtual, 5:00 p.m., Richmond City Council Special Meeting, Council will take action to “consent to the Director of Emergency Management’s declaration that a local emergency exists in the city of Richmond beginning on January 5, 2025, due to the effects of the winter storm.”

This will allow further drawdown of necessary resources to expedite recovery from the ongoing water crisis. This is a part of our normal response process during an emergency and is a necessary step in a situation of this magnitude.

Once services are fully restored, Council looks forward to working with the Mayor/Administration to fully identify and address needed system upgrades and emergency response processes.

Council thanks the Mayor, Richmond Department of Public Utilities and all city departments, our state and local partners, and nonprofit and community organizations for their partnership, collaboration, and willingness to support our response efforts.

While the situation remains ongoing, progress is being made, and updates will continue.

As a reminder, we encourage you to continue following us on social media and RVA.gov for additional updates.

Please also continue to utilize 311 and conserve your water usage until we reach full capacity.

We are in this together and together we will get through this.
