Richmond Council seeks interested residents of the Richmond South Central 9th Voter District to apply for appointment as Interim Councilmember for that District: To fulfill remaining year of vacated term

 

Apply by November 27, 2023; Noon; Position being vacated by Councilmember Michael J. Jones, due to his election to the

Virginia House of Delegates 

Richmond, Virginia Richmond City Council invites residents of the Richmond South Central 9th Voter District interested in serving as the Interim Councilmember for that District to apply for appointment consideration. Please find more about Richmond City Council and the role of a Councilmember, at https://rva.gov/richmond-city-council.

 

    This position is being vacated by current Councilmember, Michael J. Jones, Richmond City Council - Richmond South Central 9th Voter District, due to his election on November 7, 2023 as a member of the Virginia General Assembly, representing the Virginia House of Delegates – 77th Voter District.

 

    Councilmember Jones has tendered his resignation as a member of Richmond City Council, effective December 31, 2023, at 11:59 p.m. The term for that position runs January 1, 2021 – December 31, 2024. There will be one year remaining in that term.

                                                     

    Applications to fulfill the remaining year of this term by appointment are being accepted electronically and are available via the Richmond Office of City Clerk website, at https://cityofrichmond.formstack.com/forms/vacancy. The deadline to submit an application is Monday, November 27, 2023, at Noon. Candidates must be qualified voters of the Richmond South Central 9th Voter District.

 

    Applicants are encouraged to confirm their individual voter status with the Commonwealth of Virginia - Richmond Office of Elections/General Registrar, at https://www.rva.gov/elections/registrar-home.

 

    Richmond City Council will review applications and select a candidate for appointment. Applicants will also attend the upcoming Richmond City Council Organizational Development Standing Committee Meeting, being held on Monday, December 4, 2023, from 4:00-5:30 p.m., to express their candidacy. Additional contact and information to candidates will be provided, as needed.

 

    The successful candidate will begin service in January of 2024 and serve through the end of the remaining 2021-2024 Richmond City Council term (January 1, 2024 – December 31, 2024).

 

    A person so appointed shall hold that office the same as an elected person and shall exercise all powers and responsibilities of that elected office.

 

    Richmond City Council is the governing legislative institution of Richmond, Virginia, and represents residents in creating and amending local laws, providing government policy and oversight, and establishing the Richmond Government Budget.

 

    Please find the map indicating the current boundaries of the Richmond City Council – South Central 9th Voter District, at https://rva.gov/sites/default/files/2019-04/RichmondVoterDistrictMaps.pdf (note: Richmond Voter District geographical boundaries were redistricted in 2022 and will be in effect for the election of Councilmembers in 2024, for the 2025-2028 Richmond City Council term.)

Evergreen Cemetery, located at 3600 East Richmond Road, and East End Cemetery, located at 1751 Evergreen Road, are privately owned historically Black cemeteries that volunteers have assisted upkeep for over the years and believed current owner may no longer be able to maintain.
