Background on the Metropolitan Junior Baseball League
Established in Richmond, Virginia in 1966, the Metropolitan Junior Baseball League is a national nonprofit baseball organization for African-American youth up to 19 years old. Created by William Forrester Sr. the organization now operates in 17 U. S. states and in Puerto Rico and the Bahamas. It is the only national youth baseball league that designs their programs to be offered in African American communities. Each year, Metropolitan Junior Baseball League Teams compete for the national Black World Series championship title competition. The Junior Baseball League is now led by William Forrester Jr., son of the creator, who serves as the league's Executive Director.

A tremendously successful organization dedicated to providing quality recreational and educational opportunities for black youth, coordination of the league is provided by numerous volunteers who serve as coaches and assistants. In Richmond, significant financial support is provided by the citizens of Richmond through government funds and through the use of public ball fields that are owned by city citizens and managed and maintained by Richmond Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities. The league is also assisted by the national Returning Baseball to Inner-Cities (RBI) program; KPMG (accounting firm); Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation, and Richmond's SOLE (Sports, Opportunities, Literacy and Enrichment) group, a local consortium of government and private entities.
