Richmond City Council appoints Interim Richmond City Attorney, Haskell C. Brown, III, as new Richmond City Attorney

 (Richmond, Virginia)  - Richmond City Council is pleased to announce its appointment, during its Formal Meeting tonight, of Haskell C. Brown, III, Esq., as the new Richmond City Attorney. Mr. Brown will begin that role on August 1, 2022.

Duties of the Richmond City Attorney include serving as City’s chief legal advisor for City of Richmond local government and providing management and oversight of the Richmond Office of City Attorney, which provides legal representation on behalf of the legislative and administrative branches of Richmond government, including all City government departments, boards, commissions, and agencies. 

Mr. Brown was previously appointed and has been serving as the Interim Richmond City Attorney since November 1, 2019, following the retirement of the former Richmond City Attorney. Mr. Brown has worked in the Richmond Office of City Attorney since 1998, during which time he served in progressive positions, which includes his role, since 2010, as Deputy Richmond City Attorney in which he directed the Governance and Finance Division of that office.

Born and raised in the Richmond area, Haskell C. Brown, III earned his Bachelor of Arts degree with a double major in history and government from the University of Virginia and his law degree from the West Virginia University College of Law.

For the past 23 years serving as a lawyer in the Richmond Office of City Attorney, Mr. Brown has concentrated his practice in drafting, reviewing, and negotiating contracts; drafting ordinances and resolutions for adoption by Richmond City Council; and rendering legal advice and opinions on various subjects, including budget, finance, information technology, public procurement, and other matters.

Mr. Brown is also an active member of the Local Government Attorneys of Virginia and served as a member of its Board of Directors for four years.

Richmond City Council is excited to have Mr. Brown’s exceptional institutional knowledge, professional skills, years of proven dedication, and legal expertise in Richmond government and looks forward to his continued steadfast commitment and demonstrated abilities in leading the Richmond Office of City Attorney.
