WHAT           (Richmond, Virginia U.S.A.) – The Members of Richmond City Council wish all Richmond families a safe, happy and healthy Thanksgiving Holiday on Thursday, November 28, 2013.

As we take time to celebrate and enjoy the bounty of what life has provided us, the members of Richmond City Council invite and encourage all Richmond families to join together in reaching out and sharing good wishes with all their neighbors, family and friends during this time and throughout the year.

With traditions dating back to Virginia in 1607, one of our Nation’s first Thanksgiving events is reported to have begun with the first permanent English colonizers in North America. A notable Thanksgiving was also held on December 4, 1619 at Berkley Plantation in present-day Charles City County. In 1777 Virginian George Washington proclaimed a special Thanksgiving in December when he was leader of the revolutionary forces during the American Revolution. As President of the United States of America, George Washington, established the first nation-wide Thanksgiving Day celebration on November 26, 1789.
