WHAT    Richmond City Council holds an average of 12 official monthly public meetings to discuss, deliberate, and act on laws and policy on behalf of the community. Citizens are invited and encouraged to attend these meetings, which include (but are not limited to) two “Council Formal” Meetings, two “Council Informal” meetings, six Council Standing Committee meetings, and Richmond City Council Public Hearings/Special Events/Commission meetings held on an as-needed basis. 

        The following is the Richmond City Council Official Public Meeting 2009 November Meeting Summary.  Meeting times and dates are subject to change and more meetings may be added to the list, which does not included schedule for Richmond City Council Boards or Commissions. Richmond City Council ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENT STANDING COMMITTEE
Responsible for reviewing the operation of every department, agency and unit of City government and for making recommendations for operational and organizational development as appropriate.

    LOCATION        Richmond City Hall, 2nd floor Conference Room; 900 E. Broad Street

    Frequency        Typically the first Monday of each month; 5:00-6:30 p.m.

Richmond City Council INFORMAL MEETING
Responsible for reviewing information and preparing for “Formal” Council meetings. Meetings may include presentations from city administration or private entities.

Richmond City Council FORMAL MEETING
Responsible for deciding official Council action, which includes discussing, adopting, rejecting, and amending laws and approving the budget. Formal meetings include a time for pubic comment and are televised live on the local PBS station and are replayed in Richmond on Government Access Channel 17, beginning at Noon and 7:00 p.m. daily.

Richmond City Council PUBLIC SAFETY STANDING COMMITTEE
Responsible for oversight, monitoring and recommending laws and policy regarding judiciary, law enforcement, fire and emergency response and prevention, ambulance services and emergency communications. Location recently changed from Council Chambers to Police Academy.

Richmond City Council LAND USE, HOUSING AND TRANSPORTATION STANDING COMMITTEE
Responsible for oversight, monitoring and recommending laws and policy regarding real estate, housing, environmental issues, and public transportation.

    Frequency        Typically the Tuesday following the 3rd Monday of each month;

Richmond City Council 2010 Richmond-Virginia General Assembly Legislative Summit
Annual event that includes presentation and discussion of proposed Richmond state legislative priorities for the upcoming Session of the Virginia General Assembly. Participants include Richmond City Council, Virginia General Assembly members representing Richmond (Richmond Delegation), Mayor of Richmond and Richmond Public Schools Board.

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 2009; 4:00-5:30 p.m.
Richmond City Council HEALTH, HUMAN SERVICES AND EDUCATION STANDING COMMITTEE
Responsible for oversight, monitoring and recommending laws and policy regarding public mental and physical health, social services, recreation, and the public library. The Committee balances the primary role of the Richmond Public Schools Board regarding oversight of Richmond Public Schools against Council’s responsibility for appropriation of public funds.

WHAT            Her last meeting serving as an Interim member of Richmond City Council, tonight Richmond City Councilwoman Betty L. Squire, East End 7th District, will be honored by members of Richmond City Council during the Richmond City Council Formal Meeting.

Councilwoman Squire will be presented the prestigious Richmond City Council Public Service Award for Public Service for her dedication, leadership, and service on behalf of the Citizens of Richmond for diligently serving as an appointed member of Richmond City Council for the East End 7th District from February 2009 through October 2009.

On February 9, 2009, Mrs. Betty l. Squire was appointed by Richmond City Council to fill the vacant Council seat representing the East End 7th District.  As a member of Council, Mrs. Squire also served diligently and honorably as a member of the Richmond Slave Trail Commission, the Richmond City Council Public Safety Standing Committee and the Richmond City Council Governmental Operations Standing Committee. She holds the temporary appointment until the winner of the November general election is certified.

The design process will include community input for a new design concept for Cannon Creek Greenway and a redesign concept for Anne Hardy Park, both owned and maintained by the City of Richmond.
        
        The design process will include separate meetings for each park this Saturday. Lunch will be provided. All citizens are invited and encouraged to attend, especially those Richmond residents living in the communities surrounding the two parks.

Councilwoman Robertson invites Bellemeade and Oak Grove residents to see free home repairs being done by Rebuilding Together of Richmond and sign up for upcoming free repair event

Applications for free home repairs available now for 50 homeowners in need in Bellemeade and Oak Grove: Repair event April 2010
         
WHAT            Richmond City Councilwoman Ellen F. Robertson, Gateway 6th District, invites citizens to witness the outstanding work being done by local nonprofit organization, Rebuilding Together of Richmond, as it performs free home repairs for a resident in the Bellemeade community.

        Applications will be available on site for an upcoming free repair event being held April 24, 2010. The deadline for applications is November 1, 2009. Typical repairs and renovations include painting, heating/cooling, roof, windows, handrails, porch repairs, improved lighting and removal of trip and fall hazards.

        The program is available for homeowners who are 55 years of age or older or have disabilities; having a household income of less than $25,000; and own their own property in the Bellemeade or Oak Grove community.

(Richmond, Virginia, U.S.A.) -Richmond City Council issues the following statement regarding the announced retirement of Richmond City Attorney Norman Sales:

    “Norman Sales is to be praised and honored for more than 20 years of service dedicated to the citizens of Richmond. He is one of the best and most respected lawyers in the Commonwealth of Virginia and has earned the highest level of respect for his work for the city and for his deep commitment to honesty and principals,” says Kathy Graziano, President of Richmond City Council.

      A graduate of the Marshall-Wythe School of Law at the College of William and Mary, Sales has served as the Richmond City Attorney since 2005. In this position, he provides legal representation on behalf of the legislative and administrative branches of government, which includes all departments, boards, commissions and agencies of the City.  Prior work included progressive service as Assistant and Senior Assistant Richmond City Attorney and work in the private sector.
