WHAT Richmond City Councilman Doug Conner, South Central 9th District, Richmond City Council, invites the entire community to the 2010 Grand opening of the Richmond Public Schools G. H. Reid Elementary School Greenhouse and Community Garden.

The 2010 Grand Opening of the Richmond Public Schools G. H. Reid Elementary School Greenhouse and Community Garden is being held to commemorate the recent work that has been accomplished on this project and honor Richmond Public Schools staff, students, parents, and teachers and, government, public and private organizations, agencies and community volunteers. Some of this project’s supporters include Richmond Public Schools, Richmond Behavioral Health Authority, Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth, Virginia Cooperative Extension - Richmond City 4-H and the Richmond Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities.

The Richmond Public Schools G. H. Reid Elementary School Greenhouse and Community Garden will be a nature garden and outdoor learning classroom that will provide students with hands-on learning regarding environmental studies as they plant and care for plants and vegetables. The “living exercises” that will be performed will serve to further educate students about such things as the food industry, farming, plant husbandry, biology, ecology, stormwater conservation, crop rotation and green technology.

Plans for the project include providing educational opportunities to the surrounding neighborhood and for parents, students, families and the community to volunteer and keep the garden healthy.
