In 1994, the United States of America Congress and U.S. President William J. Clinton designated the existing Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday (established in 1986) as a national day of service. Since that time, the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service has taken place on third Monday of January of each year and is recognized across the United States of America as a day to encourage Americans to action through volunteer service.

The day is named after Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a vital leader of the Civil Right Movement in the United States of America in the 20th Century.
