Richmond City Council
commends the tremendous efforts and ongoing work of Richmond residents, Richmond
government staff and entities responding to the devastating destruction caused
by the 2016 Richmond Severe June Storm
Throughout the aftermath and storm recovery efforts, Richmond City
Council applauds the huge community love, spirit and caring displayed by Richmond
residents and neighbors helping neighbors in taking care of families and their loved
ones.
WHAT (Richmond,
Virginia U.S.A.) - Richmond
City Council commends the tremendous efforts and ongoing work of Richmond residents,
Richmond government staff and entities responding to the devastating destruction
caused by the 2016 Richmond Severe June Storm that
hit our city the night of Thursday, June 16, 2016.
Resulting in millions of
dollars in estimated damages and cleanup costs, the storm toppled huge trees that
damaged houses, cars, utility lines and fences; ripped up sidewalks and lawns;
and, caused further property damage throughout major sections of Richmond.
Leaving thousands of homes
and businesses without power and numerous city streets impassable, the storm caused
widespread destruction in many neighborhoods that has significantly impacted a
great many Richmond residents.
Some
of the dedicated ongoing Richmond government work of protection, preparation,
response and recovery include that of the Richmond Police Department, Richmond
Department of Fire and Emergency Services, Richmond Department of Emergency
Communications, Richmond Department of Public Utilities, Richmond Department of
Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities, Richmond Department of Public
Works, Richmond Office of Animal Care and Control, Richmond Department of
Social Services, and Richmond Department of Information Technology.
Richmond
City Council also recognizes the efforts of the GRTC Transit System; Richmond
Office of the City Sheriff; Virginia Department of Health - Richmond Health
District Office; American Red Cross - Greater Richmond Chapter, and Richmond nonprofit
organizations for their assistance on behalf of Richmond families. Council also
thanks Dominion Virginia Power for their enormous work restoring electrical power,
local businesses for their support, and Richmond-Area news media for helping
keep families informed.
